Além da poluição causada pela exploração e em acidentes no transporte do petróleo, vão todos os anos para o ralo cerca de 363 milhões de galões de óleo usado em terra e resíduos urbanos e industriais que terminam invariavelmente nos oceanos.

Outro fator importante da poluição por óleo é o esgoto e a limpeza de navios, que liberam milhões de galões de petróleo em procedimentos que descarregam quantidades ínfimas de cada vez e que terminam no total de 137 milhões de galões anuais.
